Probably my fav moth seen - though rare - is the Gold Spot. I’m looking out for it as September approaches. I did get a pic of one last year, as you see. It has a great name. Plusia festucae - presumably bec it looks like a rich jewel (as in Greek ‘plousios’, rich) & likes a habitat of tufted-grass (festuca).
It also likes damp habitats, exactly as my garden is now after weeks of rainy days. 🌧️

The buddleia is in full flower, the sun strong between the rain showers. Ideal day for catching sight of a Peacock butterfly Aglais Io grabbing some food - paying a visit to our resident colony of its cousins Aglais urticae whose population here this week rose to nine!

It’s been a wonderful couple of days butterfly spotting with nine different species visiting us. Newest arrivals are Pararge Aegeria - Speckled Wood - flitting in and out of the shade. I’d love to know for sure what this extraterrestrial-like creature is. I think it’s either a white ermine or satin moth, but better lepidopterists than me might correct me. I took the poorer photo looking at the moth’s face and comb-like antennae yesterday - a difficult angle as it was sitting on the garage door. I took the other photo earlier of another example, sitting on the floor.

To celebrate the start of (meteorological) summer, this beautiful Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta) has paid a visit to our neighbourhood

Its genus ‘Vanessa’ is a group of brush-footed butterflies. Like so many first classified & named by the entomologist Fabricius, ‘Atalanta’ is taken from ancient Greek mythology, a fleet-footed princess.

Yearning to see butterflies again. But it’s a long wait through winter till the air & sun are warm enough to bring some out of hibernation or the right food plants are available for a particular species. Like the (Pyronia tithonus) which feeds on bramble flowers & can be seen in crowds flitting along the hedgerows. I took this photo last July! “Pyronia' is from the Greek for fire πυρ (pyr), a reference to the bright blazing orange on the its wings
