Le Fantôme de l'Opéra by Gaston Leroux. Despite having read several other Leroux novels, and despite an obvious interest in the topics and themes of this one due to my current RPG work, I'd never read Le Fantôme de l'Opéra. And to be honest, I'm not sure I'd recommend it. The substance is great and inventive. The character of the Fantôme, the ambiguity as to its nature, the blend of that supernatural theme with the inner workings of the opera house, all of that is great. But Leroux was a serial writer, and it feels all through the novel, especially the second half which drags on seemingly forever with little to no benefit story wise. So utlimately, I'm happy I read it, but more for documentary reasons than any literary enjoyment. I read somewhere that one of Leroux's genius findings in this book was that in order to reinforce versimilitude, he quoted real people still alive at the time of publication, even though they'd never been asked about it. But of course, since I don't know who is real and who isn't 110 years on, that was lost on me. #novel #thriller #leroux #french
