Today I’m working through one of Levinas’s Talmud interpretations, where he argues (in the wake of the 1969 upheavals in France) that there is a difference between the state’s responsibilities to the people and the people’s moral obligation to each other. With some recent exceptions, most philosophical scholarship about #Levinas draws a sharp distinction between his secular & his #Jewish works, but it’s hard not to see the massive overlap between the two when you read them side by side. Tues and Thurs are my days when scholarship-time is dedicated to a future project dealing with Lévinas’s ethics, particularly his efforts to reduce Western rationalism into perspective and balance with other aspects of human experience.
