MUSEUM OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK

This historic hotel was home to one of the most well-known gay bathhouses in New York City in the 1970s. The Continental Baths, located in the basement of the Ansonia Hotel, claimed to be able to serve 1,000 men, 24 hours a day with private rooms, a disco, and a cabaret. Future stars like Bette Midler, Barry Manilow, and Patti LaBelle, performed at the bathhouse as well as established musicians like Cab Calloway, Lesley Gore, and even the Andrews Sisters. More on the hotel: bit.ly/3spDDe8

A towel from the Continental Baths is featured in “New York at Its Core.” This section of our permanent exhibition explores the ways in which LGBTQ+ life in New York became far more open and visible following the Stonewall Uprising of 1969.

was an artist.
More than a singer, more than a musician, more than an entertainer, she was a complete artist.
She invented the character of “Dusty”, and found a way to live her life through it. She was powerful and in control.

It’s time for Hand Drama Class with !

Dusty’s right hand should get an OSCAR™️; it’s the of Hand Drama!
It’s add a whole level of storytelling dimension to her music that doesn’t necessarily come through in an audio recording.

TODAY IN QUEER BROADCASTING HISTORY

LIVE AND LET LIVE - 7/15/1962, WBAI radio, NYC (and later other stations)

In 1962, New York gay activist Randy Wicker was tired of radio's third-person discussions of homosexuality, with mental-health professionals yammering sickness-theory nonsense about us and saying things that had no connection with gay life as Randy had seen it.

So he approached a radio station that had aired such shows and convinced them to broadcast a panel of eight gay or bisexual men, talking for themselves about their own lives for several hours - a radical idea for 1962. LIVE AND LET LIVE aired on WBAI, and was later heard on other Pacifica stations and other nonprofit and educational radio outlets. You can now listen to it online. Here's part 1:

TODAY IN QUEER TV HISTORY

NEWS - 7/11/1976, various networks

From today in 1976: Coverage of the gay rights demonstration outside the Democratic National Convention in NYC.

Note the "GAYS FOR CARTER" banner and an early reclamation of the pink triangle on a protest sign, set in a black circle like the future ACT UP logo. NBC covered it, and this video might (or might not) be from that network.

At the time, NBC's in-house subject index, which used lots of abbreviations, logged their report as being about a protest by "homos."

TODAY IN QUEER TV HISTORY

CNN NEWS - 7/7/1981

Today in 1981, CNN aired what was probably the first national American TV news report on AIDS: a short piece about a rare skin cancer that had been diagnosed in 41 young gay men.

The Cable News Network was relatively new then: it had launched just one year earlier.

The Nazis called them "antisocial" elements, "criminals" and "mentally handicapped" people.

But the lesbians imprisoned in the Ravensbrück women's concentration camp during the Holocaust were quite different.

Modern researchers and feminists are trying to reconstruct the memory of these women and the stories of their lives.

"Whom again must I persuade
to lead you back to her love? Who, Sappho,
is doing you wrong?

For if she flees, swiftly she will pursue;
if she refuses gifts, soon she shall give them;
and if she does not love, swiftly she will love
even if she does not wish to.

Come to me again and ease my pain;
Take bitter care from my mind and give me
all I long for. Stand beside me,
, as my sister in arms."
