I am searching for a #legal expert who can help me with understanding the #LGPL, especially regarding the difference between static and dynamic linking and the weird contradictions in the text dealing with derivative work. Please RT.

Question on #licenses: Take an #LGPL licensed library written in C, compile it to JavaScript with #emscripten, and bundle it into a JavaScript app. The JavaScript app has to be LGPL licensed because the dynamic linking exception doesn't apply.

Same LGPL library, build a #NodeAPI module that statically links against it, and use that in a JavaScript app. The NodeAPI code would be LGPL'ed since it's statically linked, but would the #JavaScript code be fine since node loads the module dynamically?

@aeva The Qt Company has become open-source hostile in the past few years. They pull all sorts of sketchy stuff (e.g. making 5.12 LTS updates commercial) and constantly try to bamboozle people into commercial licensing when #LGPL will do.

I've been using Qt since 2000 and use to love it, but now I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone because of the way they treat developers.

@RyunoKi If I think that my software be picked up and integrated into some closed-source solution, and I don't care (but I still think my part should remain free), I usually opt for the Mozilla Public License #MPL. If I do care, I'll generally stick with #GPL or #LGPL, usually v2+ or v2 only (never v3+ or v3 only)

dialog4ports (image 1) depends on dialog (#LGPL). To "fix": edit /usr/ports/Mk/bsd.commands.mk to add your version, now "make config" uses the new utility. Easy! :flan_guns:​

But why there is #gpl and #agpl ? Why not just make everything #agpl?
