On my recent cemetery walk, i came across the grave of Gerard de Vries.

My interest peaked because “Radio Presenter” was written on the headstone so i looked him up on the internet and this is what i found:

Biography Gerard de Vries
Country singer and radio DJ specializing in Dutch adaptations of American country songs.

1960 - 1980
As Cowboy Gerard, Gerard de Vries (19-8-1933) scored some big hits in the 1960s and 1970s. For example, A Game Of Cards is an adaptation of A Deck Of Cards by Texas Tyler and Giddy Up Go is an adaptation of a hit by Red Sovine. Many of his songs feature life as a truck driver, recited in parlando style. Interestingly, De Vries' translated songs do not rhyme while those of the originals do. Cowboy Gerard's arrangements often have a moralizing undertone, as in the song “Handen”, written by himself, in which he lists both the positive and negative activities people can perform with their hands. For example, people can hold a child with their hands but also clasp a gun. He then concludes the song with "We have so very much in our own hands”. And in the song “Teddybeer”, De Vries goes sentimental. In it, a handicapped boy seeks contact via the 27MC with truck drivers. He got the 27MC transceiver from his father, who has passed away. He feels lonely because his mother has to work all day to earn a living. He gets talking to a driver, who eventually comes to see him and briefly fulfills his dream of becoming a truck driver too by letting him sit in his truck. De Vries scores a top ten hit with “Teddybeer” in 1976. Besides being a singer, De Vries is a disc jockey for country programs, initially with Radio Veronica and later with the TROS (Kookpunt, Sliep Uit and Country & Western). He caused a sensation by being the first disc jockey to openly declare his homosexuality. In 1980 he translated the Kenny Rogers hit The Coward Of The Country (De Lafaard Van De Stad) for the Drenthe singer Gerard Schoonebeek. After his career as a singer and disc jockey, De Vries turned to the path of the paranormal world. Gerard de Vries has meant a lot to country music in the Netherlands, as evidenced by the award given annually to the most promising Dutch country group/artist, the Gerard de Vries Award.
