@yjunechoe I believe @gaborcsardi ran into something similar last month with {remotes}: github.com/r-lib/remotes/issue and traced it back to the method from `utils::download.file()`, which uses by default.

If you set `options(download.file.method = "wget")` (which I believe is available on distros), then it avoids the certificate verification (but this is running into the edge of my knowledge of networking)

Smacked head-first into a stupid issue with the package deployed by / / - turns out that if you copy the DLLs out of the MinGW environment (you know, like if you want to actually *deploy* an application that uses them), libcurl suddenly starts freaking out about "SSL CA cert" problems.

Someone on StackOverflow noticed there's an alternate "mingw-w64-x86_64-curl-winssl" package that doesn't seem to suffer from this issue (which I confirmed). What a damned mess!

@SpaceLifeForm @Perl This isn’t just shelling out to or (which core tools like already fall back on). This is about in-process , which is currently best supported in by IO::Socket::SSL and its dependency Net::SSLeay, which in turn depends on either or with development header files.

There are modules that wrap and other interfaces, but the more popular HTTP and other client modules don’t use them.

Wrote a little tool in C++ using and nlohmann to query @SDF 's public feed of 20 most recent federated posts every 5 minutes and spit out post age statistics. Here are the first few samples as a chart:
