Dom Hélder Câmara died on 27 August 1999. He was was a Brazilian Catholic archbishop and a self-identified socialist. Câmara was an advocate of liberation theology. He did social and political work for the poor and for human rights and democracy during the military regime. Câmara preached for a church closer to the disfavoured people. 1/2

So much of his message reminds me of a book of liberation theology by Allan B. Boesak called Comfort and Protest: The Apocalypse of John from a South African Perspective. This was a highlight of my seminary education. I hear so much of that liberation theology spirit in his words.

#OTD Ernesto Cardenal was born in 1925. He was a liberation theologist and Marxist who collaborated with the Sandinista National Liberation Front to free Nicaragua from the regime of dictator Anastasio Somoza Debayle. He later become a minister of culture in the Sandinista government. He also founded an artists’ community on the Solentiname Islands.

Gods preference for the poor and oppressed the need of community to band together and care for all. All these evangelists want you to say a prayer but none of them take the work of building abetter world seriously. What the duck do you think bring forth the kingdom of God means. It sure as Christ conquered death isn’t creating a homogenized world and belief system.
