I remember in Grade 7, as I was reading my way through Charles Dickens oeuvre, my teacher snarkily refused to let me borrow A Tale of Two Cities from the school library... because it wasn't appropriate. He didn't think I was smart enough. Even after explaining that my parents were ok with it, a patronizing definite no. Shithead.
I said "Fine, I'll get it from the public library."
And I did. And read all of Dickens.

@alijonesie public libraries are good, but also "tool libraries" and "lending libraries" will have everything from ice cream makers to blade saws and snow shoes! You might also find them at "Maker Spaces" which have the tools and space to use them! Public libraries also have things like park passes, snow shoes, sports equipment, musical instruments, and so much more!

The great thing about the Reddit boycott is that I'm actually spending time reading the Ursula Le Guin book I got from the library.

If you could see my New Year’s resolutions on my other account on a server that is currently down, you would see that one was not to buy any more books to read until the to-be-read pile is below 12.
I cunningly worked around that by borrowing this from the , thereby getting to read it and supporting a brilliant service. The best way not to lose the library is to use the library.

The luxury of libraries is feeling ok, if not positively virtuous, for abandoning books that don’t vibe. Instead of forcing oneself through, you can just return them and let someone else have at. Life is too short and there is too much media in the world to complete everything you start. .

Support your local library. I just stopped mine, and they were discarding back issues of The Missouri Review, Ploughshares, and The Atlantic.

TIL that the Boston Public Library has a really impressive collection of Pimsleur audiobooks for language learners.

Annie Kinsella, from Field of Dreams – They're talking about banning books again! Really subversive books, like "The Wizard of Oz"... "The Diary of Anne Frank"…

Psychopaths and their followers despise libraries and books. It's always been a fight for freedom, truth, knowledge. The tides are, alas, heading towards authoritarianism in some places.

On that happy note it's time to check in on what I'm reading from my regional library.

Autism in Heels is more memoir than a navigator's guide. The author, Jennifer Cook O'Toole, found out, like so many later in life, that she too was on the spectrum shortly after her children were diagnosed.

The author reflects upon her life. Missed signs that should have been obvious. O'Toole recalls the early 1980s and Ronald Reagan. Bad relationships. A person on the spectrum can be naive, innocent, too trusting of others. She was gas lit into staying with a man who clearly did not reciprocate her efforts, nor her love. The perpetrator frequently abused her and took delight in destroying her possessions. Somehow it's your fault and one makes excuses for others' bad behaviour.

Women on the spectrum, the author notes, tend to mask, camouflage, thus typically do not show up as what experts expect the “normal autistic person” to look like.

Autism in Heels: Not great, not bad. A needed voice as the predominant focus for so long was boys on the spectrum. I'm going with three ½ stars out of five.

Hey consumers of lutruwita/Tasmania,

After a little bit of lobbying from myself and others, Libraries Tasmania has now made Choice Magazine available online and free to all members.

Y’all! If you live anywhere in Texas, you can borrow digital materials from the Houston Public Library. Audiobooks, ebooks, etc. I’m in Houston temporarily and they gave me a library card and everything.

Among the multitude of errands I ran yesterday, I renewed my recently expired library card, which feels sort of like the sacrament of communion for one who reveres the library as a temple of new ideas and discoveries.

Then, of course, I had to struggle with getting Overdrive/Libby reconnected because Overdrive is a pain.

As a NYC librarian I find this very troubling. We can't face anymore cuts. We are already working with the bare minimum.

So, I'm looking for my community here--I understand it will take some time. I'm an author, a horsewoman, a library trustee...what else...Oh, a wife and mom.

I’m sitting in a library watching the outside world. I smell books. I love the smell of books. When people ask me about a happy place I often sit there and think of something inane. I’m writing this as a reminder, libraries are my happy place.
