I recommend Andy Merrifield's "The Wisdom of Donkeys" (see my short review on #libraybooks).
A good article which complements the references to similar #asscademic studies reported in posts here earlier this year and in 2022.
There is a grest deal of work being done, combining archaeology and advanced genetics, mapping the domestication of #equusasinus.
It is also good to see Andy Merrifield's excellent book getting some recognition, after all these years! ('The Wisdom of Donkeys' was reviewed in our #libraybooks series last year.)

#donkeyoftheday 71:
One of my favourite paintings is "St Francis in the Desert" by Bellini (c.1480) and not only because it has a solitary donkey in it.
But look more closely and it is *not* a donkey!
I'm still reading K.L.Smithies "Introducing the Medieval Ass" (see #libraybooks earlier) and she points out the animal is in fact an onager: a desert wild ass which is "a symbol for monks who shunned the secular world."

I've begun "Introducing the Medieval Ass," by Kathryn Smithies. (See #libraybooks yesterday.)
But I have not yet read any of it. I am instead playing with the animated #donkey on the page corners! You flip the pages and it jumps and kicks .
Tell me, media studies #asscademics at the University of Muybridge; is there a Latin technical name for this? Ah, thank you..! An #equinotrope
It's truly a real page turner.

"Introducing the Medieval Ass" by Kathryn Smithies. Best introduced with a beer and tapas. Review to come. #libraybooks
(Tapas near the bookshop in Calpe. π Β‘salud!)

In "Platero y Yo" - a gem of Spanish literature - Juan RamΓ³n JimΓ©nez narrates the spiritual relationship between man and burro: a literary thread with a long history in Spain.
Illustration by A.Γbeda of Platero braying in a mystical manner in response to the village church bell.
"...el rebuzno se le endulza, altivo, y, rastrero, se le diviniza..."
"...the bray is sweetened, haughty, and, creeping, it is deified..."

It just occurred to me: have you read this book, Michael? ("The Donkey in Human History," Peter Mitchell, Oxford University Press (2018-) If so, could you review it for us briefly on #Asstodon and #libraybooks ?
The bookshop said about a week to order (I don't use Amazon) but the other book I wanted had to be cancelled because it was 153 euros! Aaaargh!
"The Donkey in Human History," Peter Mitchell, Oxford University Press (2018), Buy it for me as a late Christmas present and I'll review it for you. π
I have just ordered "Introducing the Medieval Ass" by Kathryn L. Smithies, which explores the donkey as understood by medieval people.
I shall review this #scholasstic book (see what I did there?) as soon as I get my hands on it.

#libraybooks 6: Christmas book recommendations from the stable libray π΄
A purely practical book here: Sue Weaver, 'The Donkey Companion' (Storey Publishing, USA, 2008. In print.)
All you need to know once smitten and owning your first donkeys, from feeding and hoof care to 'be your own vet'. Health tips and how to prepare for birth of foals; a section which I found very useful, having two foals in quick succession in 24 hours!
Good practical advice book.

Today's pick Andy Merrifield, 'The Wisdom of Donkeys' (Walker & Co, NY, 2008) is a jewel of a book: it is truly a meditation in which the #donkey plays a central mystical role. The opening sentences of the book are striking: "I can't stop thinking about Schubert. Piano sonata number 20."
This is a story of a journey with the donkey 'Gribouille', and how to discover ourselves through animals.

#libraybooks 4: from the stable libray π΄ Christmas #donkey books.
'Travels in a Donkey Trap' by Daisy Baker (Souvenir, 1974.) This book is what happens when a sweet old lady decides to do something unusual and her friends say, "You should write a book about it, dear." Her sensible friends should have piped up: "No, please don't, Daisy!"
My copy of the book was given to me by a complete stranger who insisted I did not return it. Daisy's 'travels' are mainly to go shopping. π

#libraybooks 3: from the stable libray π΄ Christmas #donkey book suggestions.
'Spanish Steps' by Tim Moore. (Vintage Books, 2004.)
A classic donkey walking book. It always amuses me to hear the stories of people who encounter donkeys for the first time and have to adjust to their ways of thinking! Any book described on the front cover by the fascist Daily Mail as 'Very funny' should immediately be regarded with suspicion, but don't panic: it is actually very funny. π

#libraybooks 2: from the stable libray π΄ Christmas #donkey book suggestions.
'Donkey: The Mystique of Equus Asinus' by Michael Tobin & Jane Morrison (Dancing Star, USA, 2006.)
It's a bit of a hippies' and crazy animal-lovers' coffee-table kind of book with lovely illustrations and some enjoyable text. Ideal Christmas gift for anyone who likes donkeys and has a coffee table. (Text suitable aged 15 upwards.)

After Morris spent such a lot of Saturday afternoon running around and getting excited, I decided today should be a quiet Sunday reading his favourite book. 'A Passion for Donkeys' is the story of Elizabeth Svendsen who founded the Donkey Sanctuary at Sidmouth, England.
Morris keeps it in his stable libray. (Libray: get it? π΄ ) In this week I will be sharing occasional Christmas present ideas about donkey books. Look out for #libraybooks in the next few days on #equusasinus
