Autorkou mince je Marie Uchytilová. Zobrazila na ní dívku odsouzenou v 50.letech na osm let vězení za to, že vedla skautský oddíl. To byl první Mariin kousek. Druhý byl mnohem větší. Marie od šedesátých let pracovala na sousoší 82 lidických dětí. Zadarmo!

173 adult males & several women were shot, & c. 200 women were deported to concentration camps (143 survived). A handful of the nearly 100 children were given to Aryan families to be Germanized; the rest were gassed at Chełmno

#OTD in 1942, the village of #Lidice in The Reich Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia (now Czechia) was completely destroyed. The men were shot, the women and children sent to death camps.

Hitler wanted everything Lidice, even the memory of it, to die. Miners in #StokeOnTrent disagreed. Later that year, they started a campaign to raise funds, and Lidice was rebuilt after the war.

Shortly after 10:30 #OnThisDay in 1942, Warrant Officers Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš ambushed Reinhard Heydrich in an assassination attempt. He was wounded and would later die in hospital.

The reprisals were brutal and swift, and eventually led to the complete destruction of the village of #Lidice.

#StokeOnTrent's Potteries #Museum has got a grant to fund an exhibition about #Lidice, among other things.

This is great news on the surface. I'll be very pleased to see a permanent exhibition about the Lidice story.

But not long ago, the council slashed the budget, made staff redundant, and reduced opening hours. Given all that, will they be able to maintain the new extension?
