Turkish-owned Liepaja Steel has abandoned plans to resume production at its #steel plant in #Latvia's port city of #Liepaja. The company will dismantle the plant's steel melting furnace and move the machinery to #Türkiye.

The municipal water utility of #Latvia's port city of #Liepaja, Liepajas Udens, has managed to stop the leakage of raw #sewage from its wastewater plant into the #BalticSea. The company is now examining the cause of the accident together with experts from Riga Technical University.

Authorities in #Lithuania’s port city of #Klaipeda have recommended people not to swim in the #BalticSea, following a leak of #sewage from a water treatment plant in #Latvia’s #Liepaja. Authorities are now analysing samples to determine the quality of the #water.

#Latvia's Health Inspectorate has banned swimming on beaches in the port city of #Liepaja, following a #sewage leak from the city's water treatment plant into the #BalticSea. Also, the State Environmental Service recommended residents not to swim in coastal areas.

Via Baltica - Latvia: Port cargo turnover down 14% in H1/2023: Transport Ministry

The #cargo turnover of #Latvia's sea #ports totalled 3.4mn tonnes in H1/2023, which was down 14.2% over a year. The Freeport of #Riga handled 9.6mn tonnes of #freight, followed by the Freeport of #Ventspils with 5.7mn tonnes and the Port of #Liepaja with 3.6mn tonnes.

Trains from #Latvia's capital, #Riga, to the port city of #Liepaja will begin running daily as of 31 July 2023, the Public #Transport Council announced. Until now, #trains between the two cities have been running twice a week and are often very packed.
