Among the things I like about this 2019 #ShortStory by Omar El Akkad is the way it includes the divergence in #LifeExpectancy by #class. A tale of what happens when we have #ClimateAdaptation without #ClimateJustice, and the ways that workers are set against each other.

We're often told #economic growth is good for us & much social support for #capitalism is based on it being 'best' able to deliver material wellbeing.

If we equate wellbeing with #lifeexpectancy (which I accept is a quantity theory of life not a qualitative one), then what is striking is the country (USA) who many would argue is the most #capitalist major economy in the world, is failing to deliver on exactly that metric;

there is little correlation between GDP growth & life expectancy!

#lifeexpectancy I was fascinated by the counterintuitive nature of your life expectancy going up as you get older — at around 90, you'll add half a year, per year … as long as you don't die first!

I was wondering if it tended towards 1.0 per year — possibly at 110? But no, my old friend "view logarithmic" revealed a hint of diminishing returns after 95.

Fairly well known in #demographics is the best age to be is 10 — the nadir of risk.

But, wow — look at those 20-somethings! YOLO or YODO ?!

I'm going to repost an image from the birdsite without fact-checking it. I'm guessing this is true, and it has some truthiness to it, but is it true? When I was younger, I thought I’d be dead by 40 and lived my life accordingly. Now I’m over the age of 40, I am forced to admit I’m going to be old this life 😳 Context: I’m diabetic and have chronic kidney disease plus plus plus etc, I watched my grandfather and mother pass away before their time with these conditions #ChronicIllness #LifeExpectancy

The UK's #tory engineered #healthcrisis in one simple statistic:

in 1960 the Uk ranked 7th for #lifeexpectancy among OECD nations.... 60 years later in 2020 it had dropped to 23rd!

And if you want to have a look at the OECD data, what you can see is that the relative decline has been largely since 2010.... I wonder why?

Russia has experienced a #DemographicTragedy, with 2 million more people lost than it would ordinarily have done over the past three years due to the #UkraineWar, #Covid19 and exodus.

The #LifeExpectancy of Russian #males aged 15 has also decreased by five years - same as #Haiti. And #women are now outnumbering men by at least 10 million.

The US is facing the greatest divide in life expectancy across regions in the past 40 years. Research from American Inequality found that #Americans born in certain areas of Mississippi and #Florida may die 20 years younger than their peers born in parts of Colorado and California.
