Life pro tip: whenever you unpack something and a little packet of desiccant falls out, save it! You can use it as a bespoke no-heat dryer if you accidentally drop your phone or other electronics in water.

Phones saved: 1, hearing aids saved: 2.

Procrastinators with a terrible sleep cycle, listen up! I'm fixing my sleep cycle using procrastination, and its working

Here's what happened:

I had been trying to "fix" my sleep cycle for years, but only made it worse. Every day, I would try to make myself go to bed earlier or wake up later than I wanted. Sometimes, I would try to book appointments earlier in my day to force myself to wake up early. I would wake up earlier, but then be sleep-deprived and sleep later the next day. All my efforts only made everything worse, and last week, I was waking up at 5pm to start my day. I finally said enough is enough, and it was time to try something new.

Since any plans that deprived me of sleep didn't work, I had to go the other route. I decided to finally utilize my ultimate skill: procrastination.

On Tuesday, I slept for as long as I could. Instead of waking up at 5pm, I woke up at 8pm I stayed awake as long as was feasible, putting off going to bed. I went to bed 5 hours later than normal. The next day, I did the same. I woke up even later, and went to bed even later. By now, I had gone from experiencing 1 hour of sunlight a day to 9 hours. What a relief! I was essentially living life as if a day was 28 hours, not 24. I procrastinated going to sleep and waking up in the morning until, after 5 days, I had procrastinated myself into waking up at 8 a.m. like a normal person. It's a miracle!

I don't know if it will stick yet. I'll have to update you on that. But so far, I've made the most progress I've ever made in this.

Some things to note:

1. I am not working right now. That makes this a lot easier. That said, no longer working is part of why things got so bad.

2. This process felt a lot like jet lag, minus the stress of actually traveling. I felt incredibly hungry all the time, felt quite anxious, and pretty unsettled (that might be the autistic need for routine). Nothing too bad, certainly much less stress than weeks of getting one hour of daylight a day. But it was stressful.

3. I need a lot of sleep due to my chronic fatigue. I average 10 hours a night. Through this experiment, I was doing 11-14 hours. I imagine this would take a lot longer if you usually only need 7 hours.

4. I did have one false start. Last weekend, I tried it, and at the time I usually would sleep, I decided to "take a little nap" which just turned into regular sleep. I would recommend avoiding naps if that's likely to happen to you. But maybe you have more self-control than me.

I'll report how the next week goes. I haven't woken up at 8am with a full night's rest in ten years. I hope this helps someone else who is struggling with a terrible sleep cycle!

The weirdest 'lifestyle change' item I've bought recently is an extra brightly coloured stiff dustpan and brush, just for my bedroom floor.

I clean a bit of floor instead of dragging out the hoover and making the whole thing an ordeal. It's amazing how much more you can do with a clean floor to drop things on. Well, now the floor is clean more than about an hour every two weeks.

It's also amazing how rapidly crud propogates itself as soon as you turn your back.

Life Pro Tip: if you send a set of metal trays crashing to a tiled floor early in the morning, just claim that you were banishing an evil spirit.

Sometimes, in life, you just need to have someone who can just as over-the-top-dramatic about things as you are.

Try and approach life with the confidence and audacity of the youtube ad system serving up a pair of unskippable 15 second adverts ahead of a 7 second video of a cat making a cute noise.

Okay the easiest is to just use Lawry's Seasoned Salt on French fries. I'm sure there are better/more exotic options but it can't be any easier than just dumping some Lawry's on 'em.

That's it for today's installment of Justin's

Lui et moi, machinalement on tourne la tête pour regarder dans les alentours
Je sens quand même qu'il pourrait avoir comme un doute sur ma sincérité...
