Exciting day bird-wise. An Ortolan Bunting was reported at East Devon Golf Club so three of us headed there. After 90 minutes of studying a hedge, it was spotted! Brief but good views. A new species for me so happy times! Thanks to Mark who spotted it and let us view through his ‘scope (pretty difficult to describe location (“It’s in the hedge!!!!”)).

There seems to be a correlation between new #lifer sightings and said lifers being reeeaally far away from me 😅 which obviously results in a not so good looking photos, especially because I have to crop it a lot.
I was about to leave after around half an hour of waiting at the same spot for this common sandpiper when it suddenly emerged from out of nowhere. Maybe it's just too good at camouflaging?

A lifer sighting is always a treat, like a soft serve twist cone in summer. That bird being rare in your area is that cone being blanketed in both chocolate and rainbow sprinkles. My husband and I were thrilled to see this Würdemann’s Heron, an intermediate color morph that results from the mating of a dark (blue) morph Great Blue Heron with a white morph (Great White Heron), usually found in south Florida. #birding #lifer #BirdPhotos #WurdemannsHeron #SolaceInNature #creationstruck

A couple of years ago I was lolling around in bed with my customary box of lolling-bonbons when out of nowhere a mated pair of wood ducks fucking landed in the tree right outside my window. We don’t get a lot of waterfowl up here on Vulture Ridge, and these ducks are pretty rare to begin with, so this was a jaw-droppingly unexpected and unprecedented event, particularly for an old aunt who does most of her birding through a picture window from a prone position in the boudoir. I was dumbstruck.
They hung around preening for a few minutes, presumably so I could contemplate’em with a childlike sense of wonder, then winged off, never to be seen again. To this day I scan for’em whenever I look at this tree. Sometimes I wonder if I dreamed it.

The edge was taken off the day by Exeter losing to Derby. It’s a pity that Derby had to rely on blatant cheating by their goalie. If that’s what they need to win games then good luck to them. #cheats

Best photo of the day: northern pygmy owl (#lifer)
I was done for the day; heading back up US 101 back to Portland. I pulled in to take a photo of the sunset, and in a scrubby tree 3 ft from my face was this guy! I ran back to the car to get my camera, chanting to myself "please stay there..." He cooperated, and I got the shot.
This owl is tiny, no bigger than my fist! But his fierce gaze had me keeping my distance out of respect!
