LED control based on the pen position seems pretty doable with the B3 pin if I figure out GPIO stuff or switch to a different board. I'd also like to play with using the pen lift servo to add variation in the Z-axis.
Another option is to add additional LEDs along the Z-axis and control each individually.
Had a lot of fun with this one. 🌈

For the animation, I broke up the L path into 1” segments, copied it across layers with more of the shape progressively in each one.
I made heavy use of AxiDraw's layer syntax (https://wiki.evilmadscientist.com/AxiDraw_Layer_Control) to inject delays and added tiny paths to pre-position before each frame.
This let me set up a single plot run for the whole animation. I manually triggered the camera for each frame and cut power to the LED at between each stroke.

For the light, I used a dev board I had laying around for a TI Stellaris chip. I has a tiny RGB LED on-board that I used to cycle a color wheel.
I tried to turn the LED on and off by reading the B3 pin of the AxiDraw EBB, which can go high on pen-down, but wasn't familiar with GPIO for the TI board and couldn't find a working example of a simple read.
Without LED control, I had to yank the power from the LED at the end of each path to avoid a trail back home.

I was inspired by some similar experiments using a modified laser cutter from https://www.instagram.com/teekenng/ to try some light painting and stop motion using the plotter. Super happy with the results for a first try.
