It's been a decade long struggle; but, my partner has _finally_ accepted my NE Jersey/NYC pronunciation of that Italian cured-ham delicacy: pro-SHOOT, not pros-queet-to, not pro-zhoot-toe.
No. pro-SHOOT.
My great-aunt married into a full-fledged Italian family(whose patriarch may, or may not have been, indicted by the FBI for mob/labor indescretions...) so I got to sponge up a few of their #linguistic quirks.
I, endearingly, still hold onto some of them.

đą#OutNow in #OA: 'The #Linguistic Classification of the #Reading Traditions of #Biblical #Hebrew: A Phyla-and-Waves Model' by Benjamin Kantor.
There are a whole host of modern reading traditions of Biblical #Hebrew, from #Ashkenazi, to #Sephardi, and #Yemenite. Despite the rich diversity of traditions of #Biblical Hebrew at our fingertips, the #linguistic relationship between them has never been mapped out. In this book the phyla-and-waves methodology, which has been used for Semitic language classification, is used to map out the relationship between the main reading traditions of Biblical Hebrew throughout history.

When I'm reflecting on #Britain' trouble(s) I'm sometimes tempted by a form of #linguistic determinism.
#languages with complex tense/verb structures, require the speaker to form the whole sentence before starting to speak (#German would be my go to example).
But #English allows a speaker to start a sentence with little idea where it will end, with sentences rambling & developing while remaining grammatical.
Making it up as we go along' served us well for generations, now not so much!

An international team of linguists and geneticists led by researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig has achieved a significant breakthrough in our understanding of the origins of Indo-European, a family of languages spoken by nearly half of the world’s population. The work is published in the journal Science.

Around the world, researchers are fighting a losing battle to save the worldâs #linguistic #diversity. The most optimistic estimates suggest that half the estimated 5,000 #languages spoken today, from Siberia to the Australian Outback, Africa to the Amazon, could vanish by the end of the century.

An interesting evolution in french, I was an shop selling books in France and they didnât know the word âsignetâ. They told me itâs âmarque-pageâ but it seems the word âsignetâ is quickly replaced by âmarque-pageâ. So due to the introduction of Internet âsignetâ is becoming outdated ;-)
Below in the ngram viewer results from Google books. Red is âsignetâ and blue is âmarque-pageâ. Iâm officially oldâŠ

From an article, I wrote 2 years ago on linguistic diversity in FLOSS, inspired by the Python community. đ

đ§”â> Yet linguists have been so determined to hammer languages into trees (perhaps influenced by Darwin's success) that many still insist that creoles are not languages, and will claim that English, for instance, is a Germanic language rather than a Germanic-Romance creole. And will invent arbitrary divisions and sub-divisions of Romance -- which they can't agree upon, because they are mostly arbitrary. #linguistic #romance đ§”â>
