Despite the rich diversity of traditions of #Biblical Hebrew at our fingertips, the #linguistic relationship between them has never been mapped out. In this book the phyla-and-waves methodology, which has been used for Semitic language classification, is used to map out the relationship between the main reading traditions of Biblical Hebrew throughout history.

When I'm reflecting on #Britain' trouble(s) I'm sometimes tempted by a form of #linguistic determinism.

#languages with complex tense/verb structures, require the speaker to form the whole sentence before starting to speak (#German would be my go to example).

But #English allows a speaker to start a sentence with little idea where it will end, with sentences rambling & developing while remaining grammatical.

Making it up as we go along' served us well for generations, now not so much!

An interesting evolution in french, I was an shop selling books in France and they didn’t know the word “signet”. They told me it’s “marque-page” but it seems the word “signet” is quickly replaced by “marque-page”. So due to the introduction of Internet “signet” is becoming outdated ;-)
