An #Indigenous #Sámi ritual drum is delivered back from a German museum to Sápmi. The drum was stolen by missionaries in 1723. In 1732 #Linnaeus described a #Norwegian method to steal drums from Sámi:
""...he asks the Lapp [outdated: Sámi] to give up the drum, but the Lapp refuses (...) he then grabs his arm, slips up his sleeve, and before the Lapp can see opens up his vein. The Lapp begins to beg for his life and says he'll give up the drum. The arm is then bound up."

#OTD Robert John Thornton, English #Doctor, #Botanist & #Writer, died.
He dedicated his #Book, The Temple of #Flora, to his idol Carl #Linnaeus.
Robert planned to feature 70 exotic #Plants in their habitats, but he ran out of money. Even unfinished w/ 28 plants, the work is stunning.
The most famous engraving is the night-blooming #Cereus. The #Bloom takes up most of the scene w/ the ruins of a castle in the background. The #Flower is known as "The Queen of the Night."

#OTD Carl #Linnaeus, the Father of Taxonomy, visits Sara Lisa #Morraea, in full #Lapp #Costume.
By the end of January, his friends bet #Bottles of #Wine that a #Baptism was in Carl's future - though #Babies would have to wait.
Sara Lisa's #Docter #Father told Carl to get established before the #Marriage. He did. Carl & Sara Lisa married in the summer of 1739.
14 years later, Linnaeus' #Masterpiece #SpeciesPlantarum changed #Plant #Taxonomy #Forever.

DUJGU!
The rules for the Sámi #tafl game Tablut were written down by Carl #Linnaeus in 1732, who learned to play it on a board embroidered on reindeer hide with pieces made in traditional Sámi #boardgame #duodji style.
Among the Lule #Sámi words he wrote down, "tuichu" (dujgu) is somewhat mysterious as its literal meaning is uncertain. "Dujgu" was said when a player positioned their King so that it had not just one but two open paths to escape the board, winning.

Dracocephalum altaiense Laxm., Novi Comment. Acad. Sci. Imp. Petrop. 15: 556 (1770).
Dracocephalum grandiflorum (FI ampiaisyrtti) was one of the species that Laxman found in Siberia. #Linnaeus hastened to describe the species before Laxman published it in St. Petersburg in 1770.
