Once again impressed by Julia Lawall's amazing work on the Coccinelle program matching and transformation engine. From her ASE2023 keynote today:

- "Over 9000 commits in the Linux kernel based on Coccinelle"

- "Probably everyone (attending this talk) uses some Coccinelle modified code"

was about to hit -next (a pre-requisite for mainline inclusion[1]), but missing Signed-off-by lines seems to come in between:

2/ Related: there is a proposal to discuss "trust and maintenance of [ ] file systems" on this years maintainer summit:

lore.kernel.org/all/ZO9NK0Fcht

"""we have a lot of on-disk file system drivers […] maintaining them is a burden, and there is a lot expectation on how they are maintained. […]

Part 2: unmaintained file systems

[…] The easiest way forward would be to remove everything that is not fully maintained, but that would remove a lot of useful features. […]"""

in the mainline 's MAINTAINERS file is now considered "Obsolete":

To quote git.kernel.org/torvalds/c/2363:

"""MAINTAINERS: change reiserfs status to obsolete

Reiserfs file system is no longer supported and is going to be removed in 2025 as stated in commit eb103a51640e ("reiserfs: Deprecate reiserfs")."""

The EEVDF ("Earliest Eligible Virtual Deadline First") scheduler was merged to mainline for 6.6.

"""EEVDF too is a virtual-time scheduler, with two parameters (weight and relative deadline), compared to CFS that had weight only. It completely reworks the base scheduler: placement, preemption, picking -- everything.

@LWN as usual, has a terrific writeup about EEVDF: lwn.net/Articles/925371/ """

[Edit: ignore this, the whole idea is flawed, see reply]

Dear , why does

$ git describe --tags --contains <hexsha>

sometimes return a mainline tag when querying a commit in next (2dde18cd1d8f in the example shown in the screenshot), while other times it gives me a -next tag (e8b908146d44)?

Would be nice to have something more reliable for checking quickly if a commit in -next already made it to the mainline .

Do not ask users to share the output of without strong need, as it contains data some people would prefer to keep privat (like serial numbers for board, chassis, …).

Instead tell them to share the output of the following command, which usually suffices (for example to generate quirks):

grep -v /sys/class/dmi/id/* 2>/dev/null
