Clearly there are only two desktop OSs.

GSuite is a tour de force demonstration that UX can be really, really crappy if it's free or very low cost.

This contradicts the main criticism that has been leveled at OSS application developers for the past 20 years. Seems like people don't actually care as much about UX as they do about $.

So, stop listening to the folks who say otherwise.

I like having a Linux workstation at my desk, but any system update that involves grub or video drivers still fills me with dread that it'll be borked after a restart.

@paintedsky I've been using Mint for years exactly for that reason. "Just works". And keeps working after upgrades. Give me all the weird stuff on servers that you like to throw at me, but my desktop needs to Just Work.

@lorddimwit back at work, so here's a screenshot (staged, to not show any work stuff that I'm not supposed to share online)

Get the theme from triq.net/theme/icewm-oktan-the if you want your desktop to look the same :)

One of the pleasures of is that you can install a whole new choosing from many options which are based on widely different philosophies. Installing a new DE is almost like buying a new pc. I keep coming back to (currently with extension) mostly because left upper hot corner is deeply written into my muscle memory. But all the options (latest: : wayland+tiling+easy-on-the-eye) are just too tempting to stay with gmome!

Two days into my experiment and I have only had to reinstall the operating system from scratch once.

Gradually, over the space of a few months, I had to add stuff to my kernel command line for my workstation just to work. I'm now at "acpi_enforce_resources=lax pci=noaer intel_iommu=off".

Saw a tweet likening Mastodon to "Linux on the desktop", which I don't think is unlikely, but also absolutely fine, if that means ActivityPub becomes something like the Linux kernel for everything else.

These container-formats seem to be getting more popular as a way to distribute desktop applications.

A couple times a year I try to figure out what the deal is, but 😵.

Seems like one touted advantage is "sandboxing! Less risk to user?" but ... applications still need to be able to work with my files and input devices?

And Canonical has seemingly pigeonhole'd snaps as a Ubuntu-only thing, but Ubuntu already has a package manager?

and both snaps and flatpak still require root to install apps?

I do not grok. Explainers (oriented toward desktop use) or "don't worry about it; go with whatever the app's packaging maintainer likes" feedbacks solicited.

My old netbook. A Toshiba NB305 with an Atom N550 CPU. This netbook is the reason I first tried out Linux 2 1/2 years ago, ad I was looking for something to make it usable (Windows 7 had crawled to a stop). And the rest is history. Came for the lightweightness, stayed for the freedom. Today this netbook is dual booting Stretch (for my tinkering) and Linux Mint Xfce (for my older child to write stories on and watch some videos).
