I am having a hard time relating to the current batch of "what was your first social media site" memes. For me, it was an asynchronous dialup message board where you'd connect, download the updates, log off, reply offline, then dial in just long enough to send/receive new updates.

After that is it was listservs. (Email discussion groups). For a lot of people it was Usenet, or local dialup BBSs.

Social media doesn't have to be "a site".

This #thing, this amazing #mastadon thing… is a true rabbit hole of what the #hell is this? Quite frankly, I love it… it makes me think of you he long gone #listserv and #bbs days… You never know what’s around the corner. It could be a #gem. It’s likely a squirrel with a bat.

@Stiltz Your mileage may vary between all the different #ISAC orgs, but the number 1 thing you can do is to engage your membership team. They know everything that ISAC org has to offer. Also, each ISAC should have a #Listserv where they push out updates like #Events, #IOC, #ThreatIntel, and messages from members. In my specific ISAC, we have conversations every day about a variety of #infosec topics via the Listserv or secure messaging. ISACs usually have partners too. Mine partners with Security Scorecard, which we get a free account with them. There is also a member that offers monitoring of your accounts through a service they created that watches the #DarkWeb for your credentials. (So long as you are comfortable giving them your credentials.) So what it really comes down to is engagement. Engage your ISAC, you can get a lot out of it.

In the 1990s I used to belong to a private #listserv full of alt rock musicians and music industry people. It was extremely cool to participate in email discussions with the creative forces behind that scene.

That’s what #mastodon feel like right now. Most people are creators. Everyone’s opinion is their own. This place is more engaging, more thought-provoking than #twitter ever was.

@raichoo I'll probably move to #neovim after the next #debian release. They have an #irc channel, but no #listserv. Obnoxious, but I don't subscribe to a #vim listserv now anyway.
