Any #litcrit / #littheory people help me with some lingo? I'm vaguely aware of pretty deep critiques of "close reading" over the past 20 years or so, but not really up on all the ins and outs, since it's not really my thang. In this work I'm doing right now with Thoreau, one big part of what I'm doing a detailed and minute reading of a couple of texts, but I don't want to get sucked up unintentionally into something that is beside or orthogonal to what I'm doing and/or I want to avoid pitfalls in my own method. Thoughts appreciated.
You shouldn't try to read Thomas Wolfe while you're young and optimistic. You'll just set the books aside, calling them a vast emission of wordy, self-absorbed emotionalism. Instead, wait until you're in your fifties or later. Read his work then, and relish the satisfaction of having been right the first time.

The story about the villain is: A hurt person hurts people.
The story about the hero is: A hurt person helps people.
What do you call a story about people who never get hurt, then? Easy. That’s a fairytale.

“But where Naturalism sets out to offer a complete picture of a way of life, Granular Modernism's eating and waiting fail to amount to anything more; to paraphrase Evelyn Waugh: 'The most they can hope for is a cumulative futility.' Frank Norris once described one of Stephen Crane's narrators as: 'a locust in a grain elevator attempting to empty the silo by carrying off one grain at a time.'”

Description on a book I'm about to shelve:
"the essays and short fiction published in the Overland Monthly often portrayed the American West as a civilized evolution of, and not a savage regression from, eastern bourgeois modernity and democracy"

Since I'm new over here, I thought I'd post my newest #review #LitCrit on Wendell Berry's newest work of nonfiction, pubbed in Slate. On history, living in the country, race, resentment, and writing. https://slate.com/culture/2022/11/wendell-berry-need-to-be-whole-review.html

Reading R.F. Kuang's "Babel" with Leigh Bardugo's Ninth House and there's clearly a renaissance of the dark academia genre written by women right now. Last one was in the early Oughts. In between there's a bunch of books written by men, but there's such a stark difference between dark academia written by men and the same themes written by women that I'm stunned there isn't a big essay on this difference yet. #lit #litsci #litcrit
The first part of what looks to be an amazing and incisive series on the complicated history of what we call bodice rippers in the context of laws against marital rape in the late 20th/early 21st century. Not a light essay, but wide-ranging and compelling.
