I'm reading "USA Noir", ed. Johnny Temple.

An anthology of short stories, mostly about people surviving in hard, big-city worlds of petty crime.

The stories share a hard-boiled style that I like very much.

By far the best is Dennis Lehane. What a writer he is!

Other gems, by writers I didn't know before: Maggie Estep, Tim McLoughlin, Barbara DeMarco-Barrett.

I'm only halfway through, so there is much to look forward to.

I just finished a new story called “Strange Attractor at the End of Time”! Coming in at 3,800 words (roughly 16 pages), it'll be just perfect for the upcoming Neutral Milk Hotel -inspired anthology from Hungry Shadow Press! Unfortunately, submissions don't open until December, so I'll have to sit on this a while. (Let me know if you want to beta-read in the meantime.) This one is inspired by the NMH song “I Will Bury You in Time,” and I’m quite pleased with it.

I'm reading "The Librarianist" by Patrick deWitt.

At first I made the mistake of hoping for something as brilliant as DeWitt's "The Sisters Brothers" (the title alone is so good!).

This one is different, but good on its own. About being a librarian, being alone & liking it, being a bit weird, friendship, love and much more!

deWitt at his best is witty, funny, breathing life into a character with a few striking words.

A ghost in the throat
by
Doireann Ní Ghríofa

A book starting with "This is a female text" is usually not my cup of tea, but a friend insisted

I'm reading it with mixed feelings. I like the parts about the main character's daily life. Very well written, in a nice and simple style

I have more trouble with the parts about the search for the 18th C woman. Here, being female is described as almost mysterious or even supernatural. This is a bit too much for me.

I just got my first review on Amazon for my first solo fiction book!

"Surreal Sci-Fi For Serious Thinkers

This novel from Cliff Jones, Jr. is my kind of science fiction novel: It's unpredictable, profound, philosophical and filled with insightful social commentary and brilliant satire on ever page.

Honestly, there are enough great ideas in this book to fill 3 other sci-fi novels, but somehow Jones manages to cram one ingenious concept after the other into every single chapter.

Once I started, I couldn't stop thinking about it until I reached the ending.

Looking forward to more great writing from this author. He's definitely a talent to watch!"

I'm reading Blue Skies by T.C. Boyle. Got to page 100 and I really like it so far. With his sparkling style he creates very lively characters and scenes. It's one of his better books, I think, although World's End is still my favorite. You have to be a very good writer to get me interested in snakes and insects, but Boyle pulls it off.

I read The Nursery by Szilvia Molnar in a bit of a brain foggy and sleep deprived state, and honestly that was perfect. I feel like it’s been way too long since I’ve truly enjoyed a novel, and I loved this. I really enjoy novels about and —it’s just such a fascinating time in a person’s life—and this novel is everything I want in a postpartum/pregnancy novel. Molnar’s prose is also lovely—so delightful to read.

One advantage of reading David Copperfield and Demon Copperhead at the same time is that when one gets too sad/intense I can switch to the other. About halfway through both at this point. Anyone know a good essay comparing the two?
