*distracted wave at Masto*
Busy and sleep-deprived. Work on articles, home repairs headache (technician never came and I have faulty powerpoints), and maximizing practice for incoming music exams.

A fatigue kind of day today because of the health stuff I don't want to get into too much detail about.
Looks like I didn't get one of the grants I worked so hard on but oh well, I was expecting not to get it. At this point I've just had bad news for years (both academically and as a creative writer) and expect, almost welcome it (because I am perverse and also I am so used to rejection now that the idea of acceptance terrifies me).
Onwards and upwards. I'm more interested in the fact that I want to make a chicken curry for Malaysia's national day. IDEK, sudden craving for my own curry.
ps: the two types of sambal have sustained me all week and I'm so glad for them. Consumed with rice, salted egg, sambal belacan and sambal cencaluk. Heaven!

The other thing I did was write to the liberal studies option centre to cancel my Tolkien course for the coming semester. Was sad to do it but I got my teaching schedule this morning. Four courses looks good on paper before you figure out that for two of those huge courses you're teaching two separate tutorials and that doubles your teaching hours. I think 15 hours is murder for an academic who has 21 PhD supervisees (and main for 20 of those). So now it's....13 hours.

Won't be business as usual on Masto this eve, busy working on article and monograph. There are hauntological intersections which is why this is possible.

#3GoodThings for this #Tuesday
1. Progress in my academic writing/research -- mostly because no one harassed or otherwise disturbed me today, or maybe I just tuned out the world to the extent that no one could.
2. The second batch of crab rangoon I made last night is so tasty! Made with store-bought wrappers but the good stuff. I don't know how to make them thin enough yet. Possibly the wrong kind of flour also.
3. Music for today: boygenius, Cocteau Twins, Jessica Pratt, Fleet Foxes, Future Islands (so excited whenever they drop a new single).

Just a short break from watching VLOGs featuring various soliloquys from Hamlet. I see the table reads have done the job. ๐

Got to say, this semester I've got some of the best students I've taught in my career, and some of the best work. They were very receptive to what I was teaching, and I can see it applied in their assignments. That's all we want.

Apparently outing myself as a Swiftie means I get more than one essay about Taylor Swift. ๐น
Well played, students.

Hi Masto, I'm home!
It's Monday and I already know extra work and energy is going to have to go into next weekend's detox from the week. So, I'd better be super productive this week so I can detox with a clear conscience!

1. Did a huge chunk of the work that's been causing me anxiety for the past two weeks. Feeling relieved now and will finish it up tomorrow.
2. Finished watching this new-to-me version of Pelleas et Melisande (20 minutes each lunchtime), and decided to watch it all over again because I liked it so much. A bit worried I'm going to attempt to write a paper about it if I keep on obsessively watching different versions (spoiler: I've actually been slowly working on another #opera-related lit research rabbithole).
3. Feeling healthier and way more productive today.

One of the things you might expect from me over the next few months heading into next year are two CfPs. One for the second Memory Studies in Literature and the Humanities webinar, and another one for my yearly Fairytale Salon Seminar Series, which took a hiatus this year.
I'd love to have a more varied, academic selection of presenters from around the world!

I missed this whole twitter debate on how literature professors dislike literature?
Well I do teach and study literature sometimes, so feel a need to opine lol.
I love literature! I enjoy reading books! I think the most interesting works are to study are not necessarily the ones I most enjoy reading, though. Sometimes, yes. But sometimes I get a lot out of studying works that trouble me in some way.

#Today I am home, recovering from a pounding migraine but still supervising -- this time for my final year thesis students who will be defending soon. And answering student emails.

How does your day job or life affect what you write?
I became a literary scholar because I was a writer who wanted to know more about how text works on a deeper level, also because I'm a booknerd.
Ironically my day job is also why I've taken this long to publish my debut novel and why even now I'm having such problems finalizing production (points at workload: teaching and supervision)

Because I enjoy being ridiculously literal, I got flowers for #Bloomsday. Also poked into my copy of Ulysses (bought in 1999 but I'd already read it 2x via a copy borrowed from my uni library by then) during my lunchtime #Today.
Does this qualify for #bloomscrolling ?

Hi Masto ๐ , I'm home!
Beautiful day #Today Intense blue skies but not too terribly hot and humidity was okay. Class was okay -- not too long since I was giving them groupwork to do. Today's the beginning of the Marvel Comic Universe segment of my Literature and Popular Culture course, so I took them through the theoretical lens I wanted them to apply, and managed to fit in part of my structuralism lecture. Next week, perhaps Barthes and Levi-Strauss. And the beginning of their MCU presentations. Can't wait!

Allow me to nerd out majorly about MY STUDENTS's presentations today (same group, we did the sff short story presentations first before I took them to Early Modern England and taught them some of the basics of analysing dramatic texts before we did a table read of Act 1 Scene 1 of Hamlet).
But before that, oh my gosh and be still my heart, their insights on Ted Chiang's Exhalation and Ursula K Le Guin's The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas made me so proud! They found all of the things I wanted them to find and provided their own insights and perspectives. Learning has taken place. And I think Exhalation is going to be featured in my future courses also. Ah. Like I said earlier, days like today make all of the heartache that academic sometimes come with, worth it.

1. Was tired and rushing home to get these corrections to my grant proposal done but I managed to make a pit stop at the physical ๐ store to get my screen protector replaced (yes, because of that same iphone falling down drama. So now it looks happy and new -- we shall ignore the crack at the back now covered with a case).
2. I enjoyed my packed lunch. Yay for #mealprep! I had mushroom miso pasta and half a bagel w/ egg salad filling (the other half was for breakfast).
3. Managed to do solid work on BOTH my #hauntology articles this morning, along with work on my grant proposal. So, quite pleased with myself.
