Something for today although it's not a moss at all but just as cool! Like mosses, liverworts don't have a vascular system and spend most of their lifecycle as gametophytes with a single set of chromosomes. If we humans did that, our eggs and sperm would grow into independent organisms who then would do the mating and growing babies instead of us.

Weird, Rare, and Everywhere

In the bogs of Hecate Island, British Columbia, a writer and novice naturalist joins researchers for a glimpse of a multiyear mission—and gets acquainted with some odd organisms.

by Arno Kopecky/Hakai Institute
May 24, 2023

"Our boat noses into the craggy, primordial shore of Hecate Island. The first two off the deck have their hand lenses out before the rest of us touch land. They are Randal Mindell and Dan Tucker, both experts in mosses and liverworts, called in for their deep knowledge of these underappreciated oddball plants."

Post to celebrate figuring out how to log back into Mastodon on my phone!

I'm trying to grow liverwort spores in the white pot. So far Marchantia polymorpha is identifiable but I think some Riccia are germinating too!

It rained and snowed all day today but I still went for a short walk - and found a lifer liverwort, Apopellia endiviifolia. Something that looks like a cross of moss and lichen but is neither. It also had very strange looking long stalks with little green and brown balls on top, the only reason I even noticed it 😆

Ditto for this Porella liverwort. I love the little cone it grew into, like a leaning tower of bryophyte.

I'm a simple man. When I see a big juicy clump of Lobaria pulmonaria, I take a picture.

Mystery opaque mucus ball nestled in with liverwort (Porella navicularis) and unidentified shelf fungi on a dead Oregon myrtle tree (Umbellularia californica).

Is it banana slug eggs? Slime mold? Jelly fungus? No idea.

@quixote Sorry - that was my fault for trying to get Mast- or -odon into it by altering Marchantiophyta. Blah. Tortured attempt. Honestly, imperfect name aside, the best hashtag is probably

Some photos from this morning’s walk. I think there are some on the twig with the droplet of water. The one with a knot and lateral twig extending from the main trunk looks like an ancient, rheumy eyed salamander with growing along it’s body. Also, an above and below shot of a cluster of fungi.

Crystalwort (Riccia sp.) Probably Hairy Crystalwort (Riccia trichocarpa). It's a kind of liverwort. Lakeview Mountains, about an hour ago.

I'm very excited! I found some on my hike today. I've never seen them here (Lakeview Mountains) before. They were growing in the shade on the north side of a large boulder. , I think, But I'm not sure.

I have a question. Does Mastodon have/use a wonderfully witty hashtag along the lines of or but for ? I ask, not becuase I have an image of a that I keen to share, but rather that I’m anxious that one day I may have such an image and I won’t know what to do with it.

More content on the 4 that I introduced in my previous post.

These are gemmae, millimeter sized discs of cells that can each grow a whole new plant. It's asexual propagation, in other words these are a mini-me, a . And they are produced in plentiful amounts inside a structure called a gemmae cup, so an army of clones!

Having clones is fantastic for , also gemmae can be washed with bleach to make sterile cultures of these liverworts.
