This angry young Chicagoan sent shockwaves through the alternative community with barbed lyrics about the plight of women in a supposedly enlightened world. (“What? You mean hipster boys who read Simone de Beauvoir in their dorm rooms can be sexist too!?). Musically, Phair’s minimalist guitar and effortless tunefulness on “Never Said,” “Fuck and Run” and others made Exile a delight for the ears as well as the brain.
