@SwiftOnSecurity #programming is #creative and #intellectual labour.
Measuring a programmer's efficiency or value with easy #metrics like #LinesOfCode (#IBM) or #Commits (#Huawei) doesn't work.
In fact the latter ones did that #LyingWithNumbers for #KPI so hard on the @linux / #Linux #Kernel that they were close to getting #banned from the #LKML and #git.
Instead they got called out that their "code cleanup" commits are not appreciated as code #readability is being a priority in #Linux!

Um, actually I was just reading a thread on #LKML where Linus is being Linus (brutally honest, these days it is illegal for anyone but Linus to be) and #bcachefs doesn't look ready for me to try. So my excuses for getting a #FrameworkLaptop are one fewer.

@theregister And I only heard of Loongson and their CPU yesterday or so, having resubscribed to the Linux Kernel Mailing List, after some absence. (Have pity on me!)
After a long absence yesterday I resubscribed to #LKML. The web page warned "Volume is VERY high, 200-300 messages per day!"
My computer was hibernating overnight, I woke it less than 24-hours later and there are over 1400 new messages LKML waiting for me to carefully read.
Um, even if I delete thread after thread based on a mere glance at the subject…this might not work out.
Hmmm.
Ted 'tytso' on #lkml:
```
What people seem to forget is that free software does not mean that people will fix your software for your use case for free. It means that *you* are free to fix the software, or to pay someone to fix the software in question.
```Case insensitivity is a subject near and dear to my heart.
And when I say "near and dear to my heart", I obviously mean "I despise it, and I have spent _decades_ ranting against it and trying to explain why it's a problem".```

Actually really well, with the new EU regulations and the reduced amount of support time for LTS kernels[1], new devices will soon be forced to update to move to newer kernel versions during the lifetime of the device. […]

"I actually think we should look (again) at just making the compiler choice (and the prefix) be a Kconfig option.
That would simplify *so* many use cases.
It used to be that gcc was "THE compiler" and anything else was just an odd toy special case, but that's clearly not true any more.
So it would be lovely to make the kernel choice a Kconfig choice - so you'd set it only at config time […]"

Fun fact: One of the reasons why I quit maintainership of "my" drivers back then was the utterly long delay of any response on patches or any other request, resulting in a feeling of simply being ignored - absolutely no fun for someone who prefers to "get work done" to have room for new tasks. Actually, it looks like things didn't change over the last five years 🙄 And "my" drivers somewhat deserve some love by now...

```Is it too late to ask Intel to call this "Top-Bits-Ignore", and instead of adding another crazy TLA, we'd just all agree to call this "TBI"?```
This is not new for me, BTW.
The first time a joined a “smaller, private” newsgroup in the auld days of lore, the first thing I did was make a horrible impression by reading the ENTIRE backlog (and replying to some very old posts without realizing how old they were ... but I digress).
I used to read every single post of the #LKML. I actually opted for unsubscribing altogether when I couldn't keep up any more.
I did on Twitter's Latest timeline, and now here.
#Linus today on #LKML: "We got rid of i386 support [in the #Linux #kernel] back in 2012. Maybe it's time to get rid of i486 support in 2022?"
But from Matthew's feedback it looks like a year ago a similar idea got a bit of pushback: https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/Y1IUMDJFScAMrCS5@casper.infradead.org/
#Linus #Torvalds being very frank about #COVID19 #vaccination:
"Yes, all those vaccinated people around you will protect you too, but if there is another wave, possibly due to a more transmissible version - you and your family will be at _much_ higher risk than those vaccinated people because of your ignorance and mis-information.
Get vaccinated. Stop believing the anti-vax lies."
Linus Torvalds könpft sich einen deutschen Impfgegner auf der Linux Kernel Mailing List vor.
Ich muss aber sagen das Linux wirklich sehr ruhig und sachlich bleibt. Vor ein paar Jahren wäre das noch anders gewesen.
Naja er hat dem Herrn Enrico Weigelt jedoch hoffentlich sehr schön klar gemacht das Impfen eine gute Idee ist:
