Figured if I'm going to do have an old-school blog then it should probably have some kind of content, so I wrote some words about Atari, Lllamasoft and Akka Arrh: http://washingupsoftwareprojects.com/blog/2023/9/8/games-i-love--akka-arrh.html
I know Moose Life technically isn't an arcade game, but it definitely has a design sensibility like that of retro arcade games, so I wanted to highlight it! It's made by Llamasoft, which is headed by Jeff Minter, who's had a very long, interesting career making awesome games (I really like their psychedelic visuals and cool tunes).
Moose Life is a shoot-'em-up game where you control a moose zooming through space and shooting various enemies. It's unique in that you can move freely, and you can travel on one of two places (I think of them as "the floor" and "the ceiling" lol). Your goal is to reach the end of each stage (and ideally collect a flock of sheep along the way).

This Eurogamer article about #llamasoft is great: https://www.eurogamer.net/curry-with-the-goat-jeff-minter-on-40-years-operating-on-the-far-side
Last night I played Space Giraffe by #Llamasoft on a large-ish (20-30 inc, it fluctuated a bit because it was of course a in-dream display) touchscreen. It was a interesting experience to play it by sticking ones finger in to the giraffes bum :-P
That feeling when you need a good spit, but your Vic 20 is in storage? #zxspectrum #llamasoft
The new Heart of Neon movie poster looks awesome - I’m so proud to be part of this amazing project #movie #documentary #poster #videogames #gaming #jeffminter #llamasoft #heartofneon #music #composer

Probably won't last long, and the really hardcore are probably playing on PC, but I'll take it.
Just realized that I'm not really using the "shooty cursor" powerup to its full potential and have been just trying to pick off the enemy shots from the turret rather than sending the cursor out there to clean up swarms of them. That should help, though it does come with its own risks when you have to bring it back for a quick turnaround.
I haven't tried mouse controls yet. I wonder i that would make rapid movements easier?
The pacing's spot on, too, building up the chaos and tension, then throwing you a nice, chilled level or two to let you cool off.
My only real complaint is with those little bastard bullets that fly off the screen, turn around, and fly back again at speed. Unless you spot them being launched and deal with them quickly it's very easy for them to take you by surprise in a way that can feel a bit unfair. There is an audio cue when they turn around, but it's easy for that to get lost in the din - and it is a glorious din that deserves to be turned up if you can.
It does require you to pay attention and learn its ways, to a degree not seen since Space Giraffe, and I can see how easy it would be to bounce off of it and declare it too hard, but it's super rewarding when it clicks.
I think Akka Arrh might prove to be my favourite Llamasoft game.
So much more than the twitchy arcade blaster that it might seem from the trailer, it's a game that demands accuracy and a careful rationing of your weaponry, closer perhaps to Missile Command than anything else.
This doesn't make it chore to play though, as the right shot in the right place at the right time can set off gorgeously satisfying chain reactions.
Oh hello! There's a new Jeff Minter game in town!

I don't often buy games on release day at full-price but there are a handful of devs whose stuff I'll purchase automatically every time. Llamasoft, Size 5, Zachtronics, Introversion, etc. Who are yours?

Slightly disappointed that Akka Arrh doesn't work on the Steam Deck at the moment, but I double-dipped and got it on the Switch as well, so I'm sorted for sofa-based blasting anyway.

For those familiar with #Llamasoft games try to imagine a combination of Gridrunner Revolution with Five a Day. With a silky smooth vector graphics look.
