Llaw Gyffes was protected from harm by the strange fact that he could never be killed when inside or outside, while on horseback or afoot. Challenged by his unfaithful wife into such an unlikely position, Lleu received his death-blow and sailed away in the form of an eagle. His murderer did not go free: she was turned into the nocturnal owl.

Blodeuwedd is eventually punished for conspiring against her husband. She is hounded by Gwydion & when he finally catches her she is transformed into an owl. This is because he believes owls are hated by other birds and so ensures her loneliness forevermore.
