I was born in Smethwick and worked at Round Oak Steelworks in Brierley Hill before coming to live in London and Sydenham. Hence this article linking all the Black Country manufacturing of the Crystal Palace and it's final resting place less than a mile from my home fascinates me.

One of my favourite things is when I sit down to research someone who's little more than a name and suddenly they come to life. Today I discovered that a chap who lived in my house during the 1880s went on to become a popular local nature writer with 10 years of monthly newspaper columns. There was a great outpouring of grief when he died in 1915. Frederick Ford ('FF') I am looking forward to learning more about you!

Lots of us have Railway Workers in our family tree. Hadlow Road Station has been restored back to how it looked on the day it closed in 1956. Fascinating and there is a cafe! It was on the old Birkenhead Railway which is now a great cycle route along the Dee estuary.

Saturday, August 26, 6:30–8:30PM

Board the Maritime Museum’s historic ship The Balclutha to witness the filming of Torreya Cummings’ art work: Barbary Coast Keelhaul.

Part live performance, part video production, this work is meant to honor the historical existence of persons subject to this law. Performers, dressed in a variety of interpretations of maritime drag, will stage the “keelhauling” of a waterproof camera on a rope. Audience members are invited on board to witness this work in progress and may have the opportunity to participate as extras in the film. This project, while based in history, is a work of barely-narrative fiction.

Thematic attire (nautical, of any era) is welcomed, but not required. A small reception with snacks and drinks will follow the filming.

An elderly lady in a Facebook group explained that this robust abandoned structure in the woods near Saltsjöbaden's golf club was the local ironmongers' dynamite storage before 1969. I'm guessing that it originated with the construction of a nearby drinking water plant c. 1900. #localhistory
