My #BirdSite feed was only useful after following a series of people.

#Mastodon has that #LocalTimeline and #FederatedTimeline allowing me to see toots from people I'd otherwise probably never find.

In my early months of Masto, last year, in my original #Instance, i personalised my Masto browser view to have five permanently visible columns, then used some #Stylus #css to adjust column widths, font sizes etc for comfy viewing in my browsers. The fifth column was the local timeline, which i used for casual reading during the times my Home column remained fairly "under-nourished".

One day, sometime last year, i learned from someone's helpful post that we could follow hashtags, something nowadays just blindingly obvious, but to me back then was utterly unknown. So i began doing so, adding more over time as needs & wants be.

A month or two ago, 'ish, i suddenly realised that nowadays i was spending ZERO time in that local timeline, given my Home column is always full as a goog, full up to dolly's wax, full to pussy's bow, et al 😜 Hence it was time to again edit my css, & my Masto interface, to revert to the four-column view.

TL;DR: following hashtags is fabulously handy!

#mastodon could use some better filter options, especially for mods. There's things I never want to see during my normal browsing, but I want to be aware of if it shows up in my #LocalTimeline, to be able to moderate it.

Say, there's some wild politics going on in Absurdistan, and people regularly get very toxic about it - I'd love to have a filter option where I can say "hide anything matching 'absurdistan' on my local timeline behind a warning, and make it disappear completely everywhere else".

The option to apply a #filter to "public timelines" isn't good enough in that use case, because I regularly read the federated timeline, and I'd want it completely filtered.

It took me some time to figure out that boosts and replies do not show up in the #LocalTimeline of an instance. Now started following a bunch of more people from there, in order to see those as well. Previously I thought that there's no need to follow that many locals, because I can see them in the local timeline.

I was really excited about the local bubble that I can choose to be part of on Mastodon, especially because I believed I will be able to avoid all or most of the US content (not so relevant to me, also one of the reasons why I never had twitter )

So, I was looking for a server back in December that would be the most European possible (so international, English or multilingual).
Anyone else had the same criteria? How did it turn out for you?Boost:)

It could be also possible to steadily #follow Local timelines of other instances within your account (and not just browsing from outside), IF an instance would not block Local timeline followings from elsewhere.

Some selective special instances would likely –and understandably– be more protective with their Local feeds.
