Film of the day: LOUSY CARTER (dir Bob Byington, 2023) Deadpan, wry campus comedy hiding a melancholy meditation on what makes a life worth living; amiable but not outstanding. #Locarno76

Film of the day: WHISPERS OF FIRE AND WATER (dir Lubhdak Chatterjee, 2023) Seductive if fragmented meditation on ecology and economy in rural India whose arresting visuals and confident structures make up for its plot shortcomings. #Locarno76

Film of the day: EL AUGE DEL HUMANO 3 (THE HUMAN SURGE 3, dir Eduardo Williams, 2023) More a sensory experience than a narrative one, this disorienting travelogue harnesses the manipulative power of technology to discuss and question human ideas of utopia; one thing you can be sure of is there’s nothing else like it around. #Locarno76

Film of the day: ANIMAL (dir Sofia Exarchou, 2023) What a feeling: portrait of a woman that finds herself chasing a dream she thought she had gotten over, with a superb lead performance effortlessly pulling it forward along with excellent ensemble work and dynamic handling. #Locarno76
