When people say that things live on the internet forever, the digital preservationists have always told us that's not true. The important stuff is hard to keep. People just like to keep the embarrassing stuff around (Lots Of Copies Keeps Stuff Safe).

We had a really nice discussion in the (virtual) #swib22 pub this evening in a small round of 4-6 people.
One central theme was the movement towards centralization of the web (Twitter, also Wikidata/Wikipedia) & how to create a decentralized web that is resilient in the face of social & ecological disruptions. Amongst others, #ActivityPub, #IPFS, #BitTorrent, #LOCKSS, #Kiwix, #Spritel had an appearance.
Thank you @tobiasnx @osma @literarymachine @steffenr42 @dbs & Joachim for this evening!

@buercher At the same time, with a #Blockchain as your archival unit, you lose the ability for #selection, which is what the article started out with. Retaining everything forever cannot be the goal.
Having smaller, more flexible collections is probably the way to go. And making sure, there is an incentive, monetary or otherwise.
Some 20 years ago, many ideas were floating around: Tit-for-tat, #LOCKSS, … in addition to monetary ones. We should reconsider them.
