Instagram - 50 Miles of Elbow Room on Instagram: "Only known video of saxophonist Hasaan (sometimes "Hassan") Dawkins, an elusive musician who was active in the early/mid-70s NYC loft jazz scene. Clip drawn from the Sonny Simmons Live 1990 DVD-R. Posted a version of this a while back but now thanks to William Parker it is confirmed that this musician, who Simmons introduced simply as Hasaan, is indeed Dawkins. He certainly sounds strong here. Unfortunately, Dawkins' commercially-recorded output is slim; William Hooker's ...Is Eternal Life 2LP & Ted Daniel's In the Beginning CD; is that it? Biographical details are similarly scarce; a brief article from 1977 gives some info: "Dawkins' music has deep roots in the revolutionary music experience of the 1960s...Raised in Watts (Los Angeles) California, [he] relocated to New York City to learn more about the music he was playing...His major influences are Archie Shepp, John Coltrane, & Albert Ayler. Dawkins is an experimental saxophonist who plays many reeds including soprano, tenor, & contrabass clarinet. His 'voice' is full of raspy energy & unexpected surprises. His approach is passionate & emotional more than intellectual & meditative. ... When asked by an interviewer trying to pigeonhole his music, he replied, 'It's about shock.' ... He has sat in & jammed with numerous artists including Jimi Hendrix, Earl Freeman (Volta 77), Billy Bang Trio, John Betsch, & others." Rick Lopez's William Parker sessionography reveals additional HD connections in groups such as Parker's Aumic Orchestra, the Music Ensemble, Bill Lowe's Ensemble, Universal Lamps, Black Kraut, and Sunny Murray & Byard Lancaster Quintet. Further info on Dawkins, especially the Volta 77 group with Earl Freeman mentioned above, is eagerly welcomed. In this clip, the band is Earl Freeman (electric bass), Chris Amberger (upright bass), Kirk Heydt (cello), Dylan Morgan (drums), & an unknown percussionist. Recorded at Koncepts Cultural Gallery in Oakland, CA. If you’re in the market for a hard copy of the DVD-R, try Spin Records Boise. #hasaandawkins #hassandawkins"
