Should be interesting, unfortunately, I cannot attend, as it clashes with another mapping event: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/669312641127 #placenames #logainm #toponyms

Tosóidh gearrchúrsa liomsa den teideal 'Decoding Irish Place-names' ar an Máirt, 7ú Feabhra, 2023. Féach cur síos ar an gcúrsa agus nasc clárúcháin anseo: https://universityofgalway.ie/shortcourses/ #gaeilge #logainm
Me Mott is a licensed haulier
I first heard this at a session in Inis Meáin, sung by the writer, Fergus Russell, who I first heard at An Góilín (https://goilin.com/) a few years ago.
For those of you not from Ireland, every place mentioned in the song really does exist. (And a haulier is someone who "hauls" things for a living - a trucker)

I'm left wondering if there's a connection between something I think I found (and lost track of) suggesting it was a grazing term and or connected to 'gabhar' for 'goat', (cognate with 'cabra' for the same in most romance languages) ie 'Gabhrach' at other points in time.
But honestly I can't see anything more than speculation/conjecture that I'm doing here and that's no way to do things.

People just making shit up here lol
Really though, this has bothered me for a bit, I can find no actual sourcing with any context or etymology or proof that points to Cabrach meaning 'the poor land', just administrative documentation with attestations that it does, for both these places, other locations in Ireland and another in Scotland.
The modern Irish word 'cabrach' can it seems mean either 'poles/rafters' or 'copse'.

Tá aiféala orm go fóill gur thug mé suntas don chomhartha bóthair seo coicís ó shin agus muid i ndeisceart na tíre. Ní dhéanfaidh mé dearmad air go brách is dócha. 😭 #logainm
Is mise Liam agus is as Conamara dom. Tá cónaí orm le tamall de bhlianta i mbaile mór na Gaillimhe agus oibrím mar Ollamh Cúnta le Gaeilge agus an Léann Ceilteach ag Ollscoil na Gaillimhe.
Bím ag teagasc agus i mbun taighde ar ainmneacha, ar shloinnte, agus ar logainmneacha na hÉireann agus mar sin, bígí ag súil le gíoganna uaim ar na hábhair sin nó eile de ghrianghraif fhánacha as iarthar na tíre.
Deas bualadh libh!
