Went for a #walk around Lud's #Church (or Ludchurch to some) in #Staffordshire which I'd never visited, despite working only a few miles away for over a decade earlier in my life.
A fascinating place with a rich #history which is well worth reading about, and not just about it's use as a safe place to #worship (see the #Lollards and John Wycliffe for that... https://www.britannica.com/topic/Lollards ).
Busy though. Didn't expect the local RC #car club to be climbing up in the #gritstone hills!

Died #OTD 1417, Sir John Oldcastle, an English Lollard leader. When Oldcastle was convicted of heresy, he escaped from the Tower of London and led a rebellion against King Henry V. He was later captured and executed. #lollards https://www.historyofparliamentonline.org/volume/1386-1421/member/oldcastle-sir-john-1370-1417
This is Ludd's church. It's said that Robin Hood would use it as a base of operations. It was also allegedly a church for Lollards.
Some scholars also argue that it was the inspiration for the Green Chapel in the Arthurian legend "Gerwain and the Green Knight".
