Styles of lettering. Roman letters, from Rome, duh, are well known, the classic examples being found on Trajan's Column & memorials on the Appian Way, but there are other styles. These are Lombardic letters, from Florence, C12 & C13

1. A bell in the campanile
2. A tomb in the duomo crypt
3. Outside the duomo with a few Tironian notes
4. A stoup in Santa Croce.

I carve Lombardics occasionally...
