This is the #GreatPlane #tree at #MottisfontAbbey in #Hampshire, and apparently the largest specimen of #LondonPlane tree in Britain. The actual date of its planting is not known for sure but is probably early 18th century, and it now has a trunk diameter of over a dozen metres.

This #LondonPlane is beautiful close up. See how the deeply-grooved, thick, gnarled dead #bark peels to reveal a wondrous mosaic of yellows, greens and pinkish-grey-brown of live bark underneath. These photos are all of the same trunk, taken at eye level.
