This is the at in , and apparently the largest specimen of tree in Britain. The actual date of its planting is not known for sure but is probably early 18th century, and it now has a trunk diameter of over a dozen metres.

Here's my favourite that I run past every day in the local park. Just an ordinary looking tree, right? Wrong!

This is beautiful close up. See how the deeply-grooved, thick, gnarled dead peels to reveal a wondrous mosaic of yellows, greens and pinkish-grey-brown of live bark underneath. These photos are all of the same trunk, taken at eye level.

Next time you pass a tree, take a closer look.
