Wayland's Smithy yesterday for . A marvellous, if much restored, long barrow in Oxfordshire, lying just off the Ridgeway long distance path. I didn't have a horse that needed shoeing, but legend says this is the place for a magical smithing job.

For this is Windmill Tump Neolithic long barrow near Rodmarton in Gloucestershire.

It's been damaged by excavation, but has the remains of several chambers.

tells of a tunnel running from the chambers (I don't know where to) and a fabled golden coffin.

Visited January 2010.

A long barrow is a class of Middle Neolithic (approximately 3500-2700 BCE) burial monument which is found extensively throughout the British Isles and is related to other forms of contemporary tomb-building traditions of north-western Europe, particularly that of northern France.
