Surprised myself this morning by startling not one, but two owls, the first a tawny owl, which was too fast for my lens and flew off into some denser trees, and then this what I believe is a long-eared owl, doing its best to blend in with the surroundings.

Close up of the Asio Otus as it stared at me while roosting in my backyard Spruce tree.This medium sized raptor roosted all day and was constantly being harassed by crows but it held it's ground and just glared at the birds mobbing it and then left at dusk.

My First Owl Sighting!
Maybe you need an owl to look you in the eye and blink a few times to remind you that you were brave enough & wise enough & resilient enough to get through 2022 & you will be all of those again in 2023 & you got this.

I know I was strangely comforted by this Long-eared Owl's kind stare. I am taking this fortuitous omen with me into 2023.

Although called as 'Long-eared' these owls have hair tufts they raise which look like ears. They are smaller than a wood-pigeon and will eat rodents.
They are of course one of the most expressive birds!

My first sighting of the , Asio Otus, was in my backyard! This medium sized roosted all day on the branch of the Spruce tree.This beauty had no interest in the brave little Black Capped that perched beside it on the branch.
