In 2006, two men in New Zealand and Spain created an "Earth sandwich" - by placing bread on precise points, either side of the planet, at the same time. The men used longitude and latitude to make sure they were precisely opposite. That meant there was around 12,724km (7,917 miles) of Earth packed between the slices - and some 20,000km between the men, for those forced to travel the conventional route.

On February 4, 1749, English watchmaker Thomas Earnshaw was born. Earnshaw further simplified the process of marine chronometer production, making them available to the general public. He is also known for his improvements to the transit clock at the Royal Greenwich Observatory in London and his invention of a chronometer escapement and a form of bimetallic compensation balance.

I never understood why there was a pretence that the natural annual day/night variation could be squeezed into our rigid clock system rather than adapt to the amount of daylight available in a more fluid way depending on where you live in terms of #latitude (and #longitude).
