is one of the people who got me into work with his talk in 2009.

A nice chat with @drvolts about the policies and politics of his Australian homeland:

There's an excellent article at about the need for more long-term thinking. It interviews BBC journalist Richard Fisher about his new book "The Long View: Why We Need To Transform How the World Sees Time".

"There’s a quote by John-Claude Juncker, former president of the European Commission, who in the aftermath of the financial crisis said: “We all know what to do, but we don’t know how to get reelected once we’ve done it.”"

@sotolf @fedops don’t despair. We have been on a reasonable trajectory towards wisdom and empathy for the past 1,000 years. We’re halfway there! We just won’t live to see it 😜

The Long Now Foundation just posted a beautiful talk by SC-fi futurists Becky Chambers and Annalee Newitz on Resisting Dystopia - a topic dear to my heart. Couldn't resist jumping on making an Active Transcript for it. I encourage everyone to listen to or read this one!

@ChateauErin I tried to join the foundation last year but I never got a response. It all makes sense now. I’ll give ‘em some more time 😳

One of my favorite modern writers on the history of human civilization puts in its proper evolutionary perspective.

Superlative-exhausting conversation with two of my sci-fi author inspirations - @annaleen and Becky Chambers - on Resisting Dystopia.

Huge YES to this: ”If the world could be saved by a special white boy doing drugs, we would be there." 😂 No saviors! No chosen ones! But:

“The people that are going to save everybody are the very ordinary people doing very very small things to help each other, and to be kind.” -BC

I don't think that'll do it either…

Amusing to learn that very few stories deal with population decline, in this essay by Paul Constance on "The heresy of decline" longnow.org/ideas/the-heresy-o

The essay highlights one such story, by Margaret Atwood: "The Handmaid’s Tale" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hand

I'd add a second one: "Against the Fall of Night", by Asimov en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Against_

Population decline in Europe and Japan is a trend that's been ongoing for long; in China it's more recent. Seems persistent and inevitable, but I doubt it.

@ChrisMayLA6 @Judeet88 Poignant observation. We are very much lacking an institution for long term thinking. To foster awareness and skills for long term planning in schools; and with retroactive veto power over laws when these show net negatives on the climate over the long term.

I've been waiting nearly a year to get this done, having asked him to appear at his talk last March. We had to cancel three times, twice for weather-related reasons, the other a personal issue. When it came to the fourth attempt I had a major technical issue and had to switch to Zoom at literally the last minute - which unfortunately impacted the sound quality somewhat. The content, though, is fabulous! Should be out in a couple days.

There are three kinds of people in life. Those who think things are getting worse, those that think things are getting better, and those that just work like hell on making things better. Johanna Hoffman is in that third group, and here she is in two amazing talks to introduce her worldview and her vital work.

"How would someone fare if they were dropped into a randomly chosen period in history? Would they have any relevant knowledge to share, or ability to invent crucial technologies given the period's constraints? Ryan North uses these hypothetical questions to explore the technological and implicit knowledge underpinning modern civilization..."
