The closest I've gotten is listening to NDB stations in the US on #KiwiSDR systems - one near me, "Pembleton Farms KiwiSDR", has a 230 meter Beverage antenna. I've also listened to #longwave broadcast stations in Europe especially BBC Radio 4 on 198 kHz through the U Twente #WebSDR .

In autumn/fall & winter, my point of interest shifts even further down - to #longwave & #mediumwave bands.

Mediumwave or AM band is actually where the #radio as we know it began 100+ years ago. Lots of people like me got hooked to the hobby by scanning these bands late at night, finding stations from all over Europe of half of the US - and being surprised it works at night only! 🌃

BBC Radio 4 begins a campaign to transition from #longwave to other platforms & channels❗

They're starting with discontinuing splitting schedules between LW & elsewhere in March 2024, and, undoubtedly, the goal is to SWITCH-OFF 198 kHz (& #mediumwave relays) completely at some point in future.

Good grief they mention some "HM Coastguard channels" interested folks could get Shipping Forecast from, when BBC would have it 2-3 times a day instead of 4 😆

Some updates from my day. My treat yourself lunch (with some fish left over for tomorrow) as well as I have been noticing the glow from the blacklight of the qr code. Certain colors do seem to pop more with it and sure enough, its blacklight undertones are showing through.

As for #BBC domestic #radio, as I'm looking at their schedules, the Coronation will be broadcast live on Radios 3, 4 (still on 198 #longwave), 5 Live (still on 693 & 909 #mediumwave), Scotland (810 MW), Wales (882), Ulster, Nan Gaidheal, and presumably all Locals (few remain on MW).

Past experience suggests smth on LBC News (1152 kHz) and Premier Christian Radio (1305 & 1413 kHz), both in London. No, not on Caroline; they'll be on Ross Revenge 😉

Looking for something else, I've noticed this...

If you're in Europe, do you remember marine weather broadcasts (#Seewetterbericht) on some German #longwave & #mediumwave transmitters? E.g. 177 kHz of then-Deutschlandradio Kulturand 1269 kHz of Deutschlandfunk?

In a show of absolute wisdom, these broadcasts were moved exclusively to DAB+, to Dokumente & Debatten channel, when DLF was the last to turn off the lights on AM on Dec 31 2015.

And now, these bulletins are COMPLETELY gone 🥲

On BBC World Service, video calls for parrots to end the transmission. An advertisement for an upcoming presentation about attics. Now the broadcast on long wave starts the BBC Radio 4 day with the Shipping Forecast. Moderate or good, occasionally very poor at first.

Apparently tonight is the night of RTÉ's last dance on grumpy old, needless, wasteful #longwave #radio, which was particularly needless because of persistent interference from way more needless & way more wasteful Algerian station...

Well, at the moment, Chaine 3 is dominating 252 kHz while the West hasn't faded up properly yet as even 198 BBC is hardly audible. Will be standingu by though #DeathOfAMRadio
