And just to prove my tree is a loquat, here’s a picture of a ripe loquat and a seed from another loquat. I see more of them on the tree. I do not see apples on the tree. This is also not the first apple that fell in my yard.
A fruit fell from my loquat tree as I looked out over the yard this morning. In pyjamas, I walked over to pick it up and
What the hell it’s a tiny apple?
Just in case I’m bad at loquat identification I took it inside and cut it open.
It is an apple. What.
If you live in San Francisco, you've probably seen loquat trees. They are, as the article says, hidden in plain sight. In my case, it was right in my own back yard. This is only my second summer living in this house, so it might not have fruited as much last year, and last summer I was too tired recovering from Covid to do enough gardening to notice much about the yard, even if it had some fruit.
Discovering that my house has a mature loquat tree is like finding out that there's been a treasure in the back of the closet that I assumed was an air filter or something.

Several mysteries of our yard suddenly clicked. Why did our magnolia never bloom if it was really a magnolia? Why did it seem to have these weird fruits on it? Where are all these weird unripe crab apples coming from if I can't see an apple tree anywhere nearby? Surely the squirrels are not *that* industrious?
I had been thinking the green unripe loquats were a different fruit (strange crab apples) than the ripe and mostly eaten by birds and squirrels by the time they fell ones.
This morning I tasted one of the partly animal-eaten fallen fruits. Tastes loquatish. Then I pried it open, and that confirmed it. That large seed, there's no mistaking it.
I bounced around in the misty yard telling all the squirrels that would listen "It's a loquat! It's a loquat!"

It's a loquat! The huge shade tree in my backyard, which I couldn't identify and which other people said was a magnolia is definitely a loquat!

Xu et al. report that #sorbitol, an important signaling molecule in #fruit #trees, induces #flower bud formation in #loquat and promotes the accumulation of hyperoside, an important #developmental #flavonoid.

It's that #loquat time of year in #LosAngeles. I think canned loquat butter & loquat halves this year.
Talk about some *sweet* findings!

Loquats are setting fruit early. Normally flowering starts in Aug, but don't set fruit till Dec. This year many cvrs were setting fruit in Oct. I don't know what factors trigger fruit set. This year we might get ripe loquats by Christmas.

#introduction I'm Zach
#cloudarchitect by day.
Big time into #photography & #gardening. Hopefully I'll get to share more of my #garden here in #texas as time goes on.
Currently have a 3 different gardens spread over 1 acre of my homestead.
Cut flower garden, food garden (#corn, #beans, #squash, #tomatoes, etc), kitchen garden that is mainly lettuce and herbs, and an #orchard that contains a variety of fruits such as #pawpaw #apples #fig #loquat #plum.
Always interested in doing a #seedswap

NORDJAM: Fruits/Berries
The season of Djilba (August-September) means the arrival of one of my favourite NORDJAM, Loquats. I've always struggled to describe them to people who never tried them.
