Squirt Icarus "Bird" (Bo͝odge) Carra Schulz (2021-2023), unexpectedly landed in our lives just before Christmas 2021. She was a baby and her first flight had been a disaster. Unable to be released, she joined our family and loved and tormented us all much more than was reasonable for her 70g of mass. We were hers every bit as she was ours. She lived by a simple creed and was afraid of little. She was a blessing and brought us all great joy. The vets did all they could, but what ailed her had no cure. We'll miss you, our crazy little green chicken.

#Altext: The rainbow lorikeet is a medium-sized parrot, with the length ranging from 25 to 30 cm (9.8 to 11.8 in) including the tail, and the weight varies from 75 to 157 g (2.6–5.5 oz). The plumage is very bright and colorful. The head is deep blue with a greenish-yellow collar, and the rest of the upper parts (wings, back and tail) are green. The chest is orange/yellow. The belly is deep blue, and the thighs and rump are green. In flight a yellow wing-bar contrasts clearly with the red underwing coverts. They’re truly beautiful.

This fine lookin’ fella was in #Burwood #Australia, sitting in a #redfloweringgum.

He and his cheeky rainbow lorikeet mate were having fun in the branches. His mate is in pic 3.

They’re gorgeous birds… and smart.

This one was cheeky; he knew he was being marvelled at and stuck around to be adored and worshipped!

Here's an interesting one - plastic play money, BUT, with a commemorative design! The Royal Australian Mint held a competition for a student design. 12yo Victorian student John Serrano, in year 5, won out of 2600 entries and the 2004 #Australia 50 cents features his #Koala, #Wombat, #Lorikeet & initials - as does my play money.

After school drop offs today I head a ruckus in this small gumtree and what do I find?

Young #lorikeets feeding on the nectar of this glorious gum… noisy as, and so fast it was difficult to keep up with the little whipper-snappers!

Passer by’s we’re apologising for getting in the way but I didn’t care. I was mesmerised by these birds youthful exuberance and cheek!!

More diving. As you can see from these shots, the birds were traveling so fast they were often nearly out of shot. The last shot is the smug-looking (projection, there) magpie lark, after clearing out an entire tree before landing.

Dive! Dive! Dive!

Rainbow Lorikeet escape behaviour.

Rainbow Lorikeets (Trichoglossus moluccanus) are extremely agile and full of joie-de-vivre, both in the air and in trees. If they were human, I'm sure they'd be circus clowns.

Usually when it comes to an order of precedence at a feeder, the Rainbow Lorikeets will displace most other birds, some much larger than themselves (such as King Parrots).

However there is a species that causes them to—literally—dive for cover as soon as it's spotted, the Magpie Lark (Grallina cyanoleuca).

I was lucky enough to observe this behaviour when I was taking shots of the lorikeets feeding in a flowering gum, and a magpie lark flew over the tree (first pic). Next moment, the tree was raining lorikeets! They literally drop, head first, out of the tree, and dive for some distance before pulling up and fleeing—and they're very fast fliers.

Even on a moderate zoom I was hard pressed to keep them in shot.

During our recent zoo visit we saw wild (well, um… resident!!) #RainbowLorikeets - aren’t they just gorgeous?

We were there before opening time as we did a ’glamping’ overnight stay and the zoo keepers feed them first thing in the morning, in their accustomed hang-out place.

So the timing was perfect for some colourful and playful snaps!
