Anyone who proposes a perfectly #permanent #internet doesn't understand that the #lossy nature of it isn't a bug but a feature. Not everything on the internet deserves or needs to be kept forever (imagine if hate content wouldn't naturally be lost once those spreading it stopped producing new hate).

Yes it is sad that #deadlinks are a growing problem, but the answer isn't to cast the internet in amber but to create structures that keep good and important content around while losing the rest.

A small data center has more storage than that, and consumer PCs will get to that in about 20-30 years.

But memory isn't a perfect #storage #media: it's more like #lossy #image acquisition, editing and compression, happening all the time.

Old and unused memories fade, then disappear, leaving at most ghosts of their previous presence. Memories change and get mixed together, are revised and replaced, and in the end become the nostalgic musings of the old people.

Ook op bovengemiddelde audio-apparatuur kan ik het verschil, net als 99% van de populatie, tussen #lossless (>16/44.1) en #lossy (AAC 256) niet horen. Voor consumptie is lossless een zinloze verspilling van data, bandbreedte en daarmee CO2. Voor archivering en bewerking in de studio is het natuurlijk een ander verhaal.

Something you maybe not know about #WebP is that it supports a #lossless mode as well, very similar to #PNG. To be clear, the lossless mode is not to set quality to 100%, but is AFAIK an unrelated image compression algorithm. Unfortunately, much of the software that offer to save images as WebP only offer the #lossy mode, but on the #commandline using WebP's own #cwebp, you can switch to lossless mode with the flag of the same name. WebP image viewers such as modern #webbrowsers have no problems with lossless WebP as the decoding is typically done by the Google-provided library that supports all features.
So, test to convert your PNG files to lossless WebP and check what your gains in compression ratio are!

Bonus points if the software can produce #bleeping sounds too, not just silence. There was freeware many, many years ago called #mp3Trim, which could cut #mp3Files and could add #fadeIn and #fadeOut. It seemed to change discreet blocks of the mp3 file. You couldn't select precise times.

Our end plan in the #OMN is that all the content is redundantly stored in the network in a #KISS way, so traditional backup is less important -when it goes wrong, and it will sometimes as we are home hosting. Just boot up a new noid put your hashtags and user info in and all your content will be sucked back in a #lossy good anufe way.
