This Memorial Day, in my mind I am decorating the graves of all those who served with the Loudoun Independent Rangers during the Civil War, the only organized Union cavalry unit in Confederate Virginia. Today we honor the life of Martin Luther King Jr and his legacy of non-violent activism during the Civil Right Movement.
We should remember that the idea of celebrating Dr. King’s extraordinary legacy was not universally accepted.
The bill to create MLK day was signed into law in 1983, but #MLKDay not officially celebrated by all 50 states until 2000.
As we continue to advocate in #Loudoun, we will remember Dr King’s words and remain committed to his vision. #MLKDay2023

@wdlindsy I will never forget the first political event I attended in #Loudoun County VA, a forum for school board candidates hosted by the local GOP. The ruling in Lawrence v Texas had been announced that morning, and one of the forum organizers derailed the whole event by weeping at the podium, imploring the gathering to instead vote on a resolution condemning the ruling and “protecting marriage” because it was “URGENT!” We decided on the spot to found an LGBTQ advocacy group.

MWCOG is finalizing its Regional Housing Equity Plan, which encourages #ADUs & free bus transit for low-income residents, but not the data collection and down payment assistance that #Loudoun reps pushed for.

“There are so many people who are in rental spaces right now who’ve been in rental spaces for 10, 15, 20 years, and while a low interest loan is helpful to them, what they really need is a closing cost and down payment program,” said Loudoun Chair Phyllis Randall.

#Ziegler and the school board did know. Ziegler lied when the angry parent (later accused terrorist) asked the question about the assault.
