When I'm writing, it's the emotional connection with my characters that inhabits me as I create their stories; it's what shines through the most. I've always been a deeply feeling person, who shows my emotions and experiences other people's pain and joy in extreme measures. I've been told, in my past, that I was 'too emotional' but as I've grown older, I've realised that it's my ability to empathise deeply, to understand and explain emotions, to connect, to write characters and stories with heart, that makes me who I am; it makes me whole.

In my research for my current historical fiction set in WWII Australia, I am doing a lot of research about pigeons, to create my pigeon character, Essie, who is part of the war communications. They are so clever - in this research it was found that pigeons aren’t only capable of discriminating a multitude of items, but they can even teach it to other specimens. This was studied with really complex stimuli: works of art by Van Gogh and Chagall, among others.

Furthermore, pigeons are capable of recognizing themselves in the mirror: they’re self-aware.
