Rooms with a View
Pritchards Island, South Carolina
As a teenager, I swam across the inlet to this island. Miles of empty beach, flocks of birds, maritime forest of Palmetto and Live Oak draped in Spanish Moss. No houses. Just a rarely used USC biology lab, but so far inland you couldn't see it from shore.
Barrier islands always move, retreating. Last spring waves washed under the lab at high tide. Six months later, it was gone.
But the island looks the same.

Vast salt marshes fill the flats between barrier the islands and the mainland along the Carolina coast. Stretch over the horizon in every direction, veined with creeks.
On many of the island hummocks are primitive fishing camps, used for generations by the same friends and family.

Lightning by Starlight
Evening thunderstorms are common in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Land heats up all day. Moist ocean air flows in and up into clouds, a thin band of storms just inland. After sunset the flow reverses. Land cools and air flows back over the warm ocean, sweeping storms with it. Small and isolated, but sometimes intense.
A 30 second exposure caught star trails and a lightning flash in one shot, sea and cloud aglow.
