There’s an apocryphal story that #Stanford’s Cardinal color and team name were inspired by those of #SanFrancisco’s #LowellHS, the latter being the more venerable and better-known institution at the time of the university’s founding.

Maybe it’s too perfect a story to be true, but the current Lowell goalkeeper nonetheless wore the Cardinals’ team colors to represent, while her proud dad had to make due with Giants and Sutro wear.
